Technical University of Liberec became partner of WOC 2021

The memorandum of cooperation in organizing the World Orienteering Championships was signed by Jan Picek, Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Miroslav Brzezina, Rector of the Technical University of Liberec.

The Orienteering World Championships will be held for the fourth time in the Czech Republic. The first WOC in our country was held in 1972 in Doksy and there will alsoreturn in July 2021. Individual races will take place in area of Kokořínsko and Jizerské hory.

Pure nature even after the race

“These areas are among the most physically and technically demanding orienteering terrains. We want to show foreign competitors the best we have in the Czech Republic, ”stated Jan Picek the WOC 2021 director.

He stressed the high ambition of the organizers for the sporting level of the event. “For us, the emphasis is on ecology. We are already cooperating with the Ministry of the Environment and we have joined the project #dostbyloplastu (Enough of Plastics). We also make significant efforts to support the locals. We are interested in promoting the region with an emphasis on local benefits. We cooperate with regional companies such as Kitl or Konrad, ten municipalities and of course also with the Liberec Region. The Technical University of Liberec fits exactly in our mosaic, ”he explained the values ​​and visions set by the organizing team.

WOC 2021 will also create dozens of new maps and sports fields that can be used by local clubs, schools or the general public. Among other things the organizers pledged to organize an orienteering race around the university for students and employees of TUL. At the same time there should be significant mutual promotion from both sides. “Sport has been a part of our university since its beginning  already in 1953 when the College of Mechanical Engineering was founded in Liberec. At the same time also the physical education unit Slavia was established.During that time a good number of our students have entered the history of Czech and w even World sports. We are pleased that we can support a sports event of the format that the World Orienteering Championships is, ”said rector Miroslav Brzezina
